Welcome to Whitehall Historic House!
Open 10am-5pm Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays
Built around 1500, Whitehall is a Grade II* listed Tudor house in the heart of Cheam Village. It is owned and managed by the London Borough of Sutton who opened it as a local museum in 1978 following a campaign by the community.
The construction of Whitehall as well as the story of its use and occupants through time offer unique insights into the past. Building on a 500 year history, the recently completed Heritage Lottery Fund refurbishment of Whitehall, supported by the Borough and Friends of Whitehall, presents an opportunity to rediscover this incredible site in the present with greater access than ever before. In addition to improved physical accessibility, the project allows us to offer the space to the community in new and exciting ways as a hub for education and entertainment, inviting visitors to add to Whitehall’s unique story moving into the future.
Now that the work is done we are excited to be able to invite the community back into Whitehall. Our new exhibitions tell the stories of Cheam and the local area through the eyes of the people who have lived and worked locally. Our renovations, including the installation of ramps and a lift, open up the architecture and history of the building in ways not previously possible. Whether it be for a nostalgic look at the characteristic timber framed architecture, a calming cuppa in the tea room and gardens, or entertainment for all ages at any of our exciting new events and activities, we look forward to welcoming you to Whitehall!
