Hornchurch Library was originally built in 1967, between March 2006 and August 2007 the library underwent a complete refurbishment. During this refurbishment a new tower incorporating a lift and stairs was added to the existing building. The library now has an open and welcoming feel and includes meeting, classrooms & event rooms on the 1st floor, along with the Peoples network computers and study space.

Hornchurch Library is situated close to a busy town centre and is within a large, diverse housing area, with schools and colleges close by. In close proximity to the library is the Queen's Theatre. Facing the Theatre is Fairkytes Arts Centre, a historical building, which now hosts a large number of different art and drama groups. Nearby was the Hornchurch airfield, which played an important part in air defence in the first and second world wars.

Hornchurch is served by the District line and has bus services to nearby Romford, Rainham, Cranham and Upminster.

The main retail area in the High Street has a wide selection of large supermarkets, independent clothes shops, pharmacies, butchers and a huge selection of Takeaways, Restaurants, Bars and Public Houses. There is also a DVLA Test Centre, Fire Station, a Post Office, Church, Langtons Registry Office, the Queens Theatre, a Bingo Hall and the Library.
