COVID-19 Updates

Important update

From Saturday 8 August, face coverings must be worn in all Bexley libraries.

You must wear a face covering in our libraries

Food waste caddy bags now available

We are now selling our current stock of food waste caddy bags.  These are available from 12.30pm in Council libraries and can be purchased using card payment.  Due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19 on our operations, when our current stock is sold out, further stocks may not be available.

Safely Visiting Libraries – Covid-19 Reopening Notice

We are taking a phased approach to reopening our libraries.  A phased approach means:

• Our libraries are reopening in stages

• The services we provide will be limited– for example our usual events and activities won’t happen straight away

• Our opening times will be limited

Crayford, Erith, Sidcup, Welling and Central Library, Bexleyheath - ground floor will be open from 9.30am -5.30pm Monday to Friday and 9.30am - 5.00pm on Saturdays.

Thamesmead Library will be open from 12.30pm - 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 12.30pm - 5pm on Saturdays.

The following services are on offer:

From 9.30am – 12.30pm daily at Central Library, Crayford Library, Erith Library, Sidcup Library and Welling Library:

• Book borrowing, renewing and returns using our self service kiosks.

• Catalogue PCs will be available to search for books.

• Staff will not be available to assist with queries, but you may see colleagues managing door entry and wiping down surfaces to keep our environment as clean as possible.

From 12.30pm to closing time daily at all libraries:

• book borrowing, renewing and returns using our self service kiosks.

• Catalogue PCs will be available to search for books.

• Staff will be available at our counters to help with library account queries, join new members and take card payments for any account charges (no cash will be taken).

• At Central Library, staff will be happy to fetch books from the first floor.

• Limited public computers will be available in the afternoons only and these will need to be pre-booked by telephone using 020 8303 7777 and asking for ‘libraries’.  The computers will be available for essential purposes only, such as benefit claims.  A 30 minute slot can be pre-booked.

When visiting the library, please note that:

• We may need to restrict access to the library at times. Customers will be asked to wait outside before entering if the library becomes too busy.

• Hand sanitizer will be available near the entrance of each library.  It is also available for use before and after touching the self service kiosks.

• Please observe social distancing and allow a 2-meter gap between you and other customers or our colleagues.

• Please follow the one way flow – arrows have been placed on the floor to guide the way

• Please only enter an aisle if there is nobody else in it

• If you pick up a book and don’t want to borrow it, please do not put it back on the shelf – place it in one of the book containers provided

• Please make your visit as brief as possible.  It isn’t currently possible to sit and read or study in the library.

• Public toilets are not currently available – we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

• Payments can’t be made with cash – we can only accept card payments

These measures have all been put in place to keep our libraries as safe as possible.  We all have a role to play in keeping safe – please do your bit by:

• Use hand sanitizer

• ‘Catch it, bin it, kill it’ by coughing or sneezing into a tissue and disposing of it in a bin

• Do not visit the library if you are feeling unwell.  Customers may be asked to leave if colleagues are concerned about any infection risk.

We look forward to welcoming you back to our libraries and hope to have more news soon about our recovery plans.

Due dates of items on loan

The due dates of all books and other items on loan from Bexley Libraries have been extended to 21 August 2020.
After that date, books and other items will need to be either returned to a library or renewed to prevent overdue charges from accruing.

Customers are now able to place reservations on books and other items via the website and library app.

However, it may take longer for reserved items to become available for collection due to the Covid19 safety procedures which are currently in place.

Please note that reservations can only be collected from libraries after 12.30pm.

Citizens Advice sessions in libraries

While libraries are closed due to the current pandemic, Citizens Advice sessions will not be operating from Central and Sidcup Libraries. However, customers can still contact Citizens Advice via their website: and by phone to 01322 517150.
