Summer Reading Challenge
The Summer Reading Challenge is a national reading scheme which takes place in libraries during the summer holidays.
The benefits of doing the challenge include keeping up the children's reading skills over the holidays and its fun as it can tie into other summer holiday activities.
Each year there is a different theme for the challenge. For more information about the challenge can be found on the Summer Reading Challenge website.
Bookstart is a national free book gifting scheme. It's never too early to introduce a child to books and each pack is designed to encourage a love of books from a very early age.
Each baby, and three year old is entitled to receive a free pack with an age appropriate book, and other supporting materials. This has great benefits for all children especially for when they begin to learn to read at school.
There are 2 packs:
The baby packs are gifted through the 7-9 month health checks at clinics, special health visitor sessions at children's centres and through local libraries
The Treasure chests are for children aged 3 and are given out through school nursery units, some children's centres and libraries
More information about Bookstart can be found at Bookstart.
There are toy libraries in a number of Children’s Centres and Libraries in Barking and Dagenham.
Children can borrow from a wide range of developmental toys. Play is an essential part of child development and regular borrowing of the right toys can help with the development of new skills.
