Kingston’s favourite books revealed – help celebrate local librariesKingston libraries have unveiled the borough’s favourite books of 2012 as they gear up for a national day celebrating local libraries. The Affair by Lee Child (issued 150 times), featuring character Jack Reacher played on-screen by Tom Cruise, topped the list of most-borrowed books from the borough’s libraries last year. Local folk have a taste for crime stories and thrillers too with authors such as Michael Connolly, Gordon Ferris and SJ Watson high on the list alongside old favourites like John Grisham and Ruth Rendell. Other titles appearing in the fiction top 20 include Julian Barnes’ Sense of an Ending, Christie Watson’s Tiny Sunbirds Far Away, and The Help by Kathryn Stockett, all popular with local Library Reading Groups. The most popular adult non-fiction book was How to Pass the Life in the UK Test: a Study Guide to British Citizenship (100) closely followed by Jamie Oliver’s Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals (94). Cookery books dominated the non-fiction top 20 with Mary Berry, Lorraine Pascale and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall all appearing. For young readers, Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid outstripped the rest (256) Popular local author Jacqueline Wilson appears several times in the list, with Sapphire Battersea Hetty Feather (186) her most popular in 2012. Francesca Simon’s Horrid Henry and several Roald Dahl titles including The Witches and James and the Giant Peach also proved popular.
